ASEAN highway through Cambodia to be completed in 2015

A section of the ASEAN highway conecting Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Bangkok (Thailand) has been completed. Construction of the nine kilometres of Cambodia's national road No 1, linking Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City commenced in December 2009 and was funded by a Japanese grant aid of $25 million.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen, said the national road constituded an important part of the Southern Economic Corridor and the ASEAN highway. "It plays an important role for the movement of people and the transportation of goods in the region," he said.

He added that when the construction of Japan-funded Neak Loeung Bridge is completed in 2015, the ASEAN highway in Cambodia will be fully operational.
