Russia supports ASEAN integration as trade increases to $12.5 billion

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a participant in the ASEAN forum held in Bali, Indonesia, said the Russian Federation intends to support South East Asian integration processes such as the ASEAN economic community by 2015.

The forum comprised a series of bilateral meetings, including a Russia-ASEAN ministerial meeting and the East Asia Summit.

Having established ties in 1996, Russia and ASEAN are now economic and political partners. "Russia-ASEAN ties are seeing progress - the parties increased bilateral turnover three-fold since the first 2005 summit - from $4 billion to $12.5 billion. That is especially significant at a time of the global recession triggered by the crisis," Voice of Russia radio commented.
